Come support and have some festive fun. Aladdin is a sensational Christmas panto suitable for everyone!
Claudia Knight is the founder of BVI Arts Company, Killi Killi and the producer and director of Aladdin.
Local music and art reporter caught up with Claudia to learn more about the upcoming Aladdin Panto production to be held this coming weekend at HLSCC.
“Aladdin / Panto is a British tradition taking a classic story and putting some Christmas magic to it. When I grew up in England I was part of these pantomimes every single year. I moved to the British Virgin Islands about ten years ago and realized there was no Christmas Pantos so I decided to put them on. Last year we put on Snow White and it was a huge success. This year we are putting on Aladdin at HLSCC.”
This reporter can vouch for last years’ panto performance of Snow White. It was indeed magical! It was also very funny and extremely fun. I witnessed everyday people from the community transformed into fantastic larger than life characters. Children and adults showing that the BVI has very talented and well-trained performers. The story of Snow White was adapted to include local recognizable references and place names and was updated to be inclusive of our beautifully diverse and progressive community.
The casting, staging, acting, directing, scenery, costumes, makeup, lighting and even the music were perfectly chosen. The jokes and physical comedy were very funny and the laughter was tremendous.
I especially enjoyed the interaction with the audience. Characters on the stage spoke to us directly and asked us to respond – and not only the children – but everyone was participating and enjoying themselves. It truly was a great time and a night to remember – I am smiling right now at the memory. I felt a little tentative going into attend the Snow White panto play on my own. I did not even have a particular child attached to me in the production or a child in tow. Nevertheless, I was so pleased I did attend because I left knowing I had experienced and been part of something special.
I am certain Aladdin will be a great success and I will be at the Friday night production ready to smile and laugh. BVI Arts Company brings a creative vibe to the BVI. They provide opportunities for training and expression in the arts. They make movies, theatre productions, and super cool quirky events. They have brought community theatre and community film to the British Virgin Islands.
Want to be on stage or in film? Next auditions are in February for the movie of the year for over 18 year olds. March there will be a under 18 year production – live stage show of The Wiz!
