2023 Bonecrusher Swim: Changing Lives in the BVI One Stroke At A Time
As the sun begins to paint the sky with shades of orange and pink on September 23, 2023, at 7 a.m., a diverse group of compassionate individuals will gather on the pristine shores of the British Virgin Islands. With hearts brimming with empathy and a shared dedication to making a meaningful impact, they will stand ready to embark on an extraordinary journey – the 6th Bonecrusher Swim, a 10km open water swim from Brewers Bay, Tortola to Little Jost Van Dyke in the stunningly beautiful waters of the British Virgin Islands. This remarkable event will not only celebrate the natural beauty of these Caribbean islands but will also underscore the indomitable spirit of human kindness when it comes to aiding those in need.
A Unified Community Takes the Plunge
The British Virgin Islands, renowned for their exquisite beaches, crystalline waters, and vibrant culture, house a closely-knit community that comprehends the significance of mutual support during times of adversity. While these islands may appear as a paradise to outsiders, residents often grapple with hurdles in accessing essential medical treatments. The costs associated with healthcare, particularly specialized treatments, can become an insurmountable burden for many families.
Bonecrusher Swim, began with one man challenging another man to swim from Tortola to Jost Van Dyke and swiftly grew to a dedicated group of volunteers taking action to help. Initially conceived as an annual event, Bonecrusher Swim has faced its share of challenges. Hurricane Irma and the global COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the swim’s continuity, causing it to be postponed for several years, including 2017, 2020, and 2021. Despite these setbacks, the spirit of resilience and determination prevailed.
Swimming for a Cause: A Diverse Group of Volunteers
The 6th 2023 Bonecrusher Swim is the culmination of this remarkable journey that began with a challenge and a shared desire to make a difference. Participants consist of a diverse group of volunteers, including incredibly well-trained and prepared swimmers, skippers, stand-up paddle boarders, organizers, fundraisers, sponsors, and spirited cheerleaders. Each volunteer understands the importance of their collective effort, and safety remains the highest priority throughout the event. Stringent measures are put in place to ensure the well-being of the swimmers.
Teams can share the distance or take on the challenge as an individual swimmer. This year, 17 swimmers have signed up for the Bonecrusher Swim. Six of these swimmers have signed up as individuals, demonstrating their commitment to pushing their limits for a noble cause.
Navigating the Waters: A Test of Endurance
The waters of the British Virgin Islands are as unpredictable as they are beautiful. Sometimes, the currents align with the swimmer, propelling them forward with ease, while at other times, they push against the swimmer, presenting a formidable challenge. Experienced skippers and paddle boarders play a crucial role in navigating these waters, providing guidance and support to ensure that swimmers safely reach their destination. It’s a testament to the teamwork and unity that define this event.
Funds for a Healthier Tomorrow
The 6th 2023 Bonecrusher Swim is expected to surpass all expectations, not only in terms of participation but also in the incredible generosity of sponsors, fundraisers, and donors. Friends, family members, local businesses, and even international well-wishers are rallying behind the cause, contributing funds that tangibly transform the lives of those in need.
All money raised assists families facing financial difficulties due to medical issues. The fund predominantly assists cases involving children and families struggling with medical and logistical costs. While most medical expenses are covered by national health insurance and insurance policies, there is often a significant shortfall, particularly for expenses such as flights and accommodation for treatment. Bonecrusher Swim steps in to alleviate this financial burden during what is always an extremely challenging time for these families.
No Paid Staff: Every Dollar to the Medical Fund
One of the hallmarks of the Bonecrusher Swim is that it operates with no paid staff. Every person involved in organizing, coordinating, and facilitating the event does so as a dedicated volunteer. This commitment ensures that every dollar raised goes directly to the medical relief fund. There are no administrative costs or salaries to cover, allowing for the maximization of the impact of each contribution.
The Spirit of Giving: A Remarkable First Year
In its inaugural year, the 2023 Bonecrusher Swim achieved its highest fundraising total, raising a remarkable $20,000. During that year, the event garnered support from corporate sponsors and a dedicated Virgin Team. Notably, Richard Branson generously matched every donation, doubling the impact of contributions in that initial year.
